Cedar Siding Installation

Trust your next cedar siding job to the experts at Exterior Renovations

There is nothing like genuine cedar. Organic, solid, stable and naturally resistant to the elements, it has enhanced the beauty of homes for hundreds of years. You can achieve beautiful results with the right mix and match of various types of profiled siding horizontally and vertically), or even combine profiled siding with white or red cedar shingles.

Wood has been a favorite choice for siding options throughout the United States and Canada. Whether it is vertical siding like board and batten, or horizontal siding like clapboards, shakes, and shingles, there are a few species and grades commonly used for all applications.

Exterior Renovations knows what species are readily available in our market. Before settling on a siding material, ask questions about rot resistance, splitting, checking, or cupping. A good rule of thumb is to buy the best grade of siding you can afford. Look for clear grains whenever possible, and make certain that the wood acclimates on site, is properly sealed, and is thoroughly protected upon installation.

In the Maryland area, cedar siding has been the longtime favorite.

Cedar siding is known for its grain and its rot resistance. It is straight and resists splitting. Cedar takes a stain well and reveals a rich character. It is commonly used in shakes and shingles because it is dimensionally stable, resists swelling, and has less cupping and splitting. Cedar clapboards are popular, too, but clear grade “A” cedar can be costly. Still, for its grain and texture, cedar is preferred for stain applications. Cedar siding is naturally more moisture and insect-resistant than pine, but must be treated and maintained to retain these qualities. All woods must be sealed and stained or painted to resist moisture, damage, and decay.

Perhaps the hallmark of rich texture and tone, redwood is a good choice for siding in all climates. Redwood resists shrinking, so it holds its profile and keeps its joints with little warping or cupping. Redwood has little pitch or resin, so it absorbs and retains its finish very well and requires less maintenance than some other species. Redwood is also naturally insect resistant, not just on the face but throughout the wood. Grown in the West, redwood can be difficult to obtain in our region.

As with most things today, we have a variety of imported wood from around the world. Two of the more popular are Ipe and Cumaru.

ipe wood sidingIpe (pronounced ee-pay) wood, also called Brazilian Walnut is typically found in South America and some parts of Central America. It is one of the densest hardwoods available, three times harder than cedar. Ipe has the same fire rating as concrete and steel, meaning it resists flames much longer than softer woods, and is so dense that it doesn’t float in water. Its dense cell structure serves as a natural deterrent to insects, decay and models. Ipe is highly durable, eco friendly (100% natural wood), fire, weather and pest resistant.

Cumaru or Brazilian teak as it is widely called is known for its exceptional hardness and durability. This dense wood has a range of colors varying from a tan brown to a reddish brown with some pieces offering a black striping. This exotic hardwood is a great choice for both residential and commercial installations, especially to users who prefer a more brownish look to their application. Cumaru’s appearance makes it a great sustainable alternative for Burmese teak, with the added benefit of being more than three times as hard.

Installing these woods takes additional time, depending on the product, for example ipe, you might have to drill holes. There are also, different underlayments for cedar etc., staining, painting options for the type of wood you choose.
